The Necessity of Wings

In the wee hours of the moonlit night

I woke again.

I spent two hours

Trying to forget you.

Not to remember your blue eyes laughing

Or your devilish grin

With some secret hidden behind it.

Then, just as quickly,

I was trying not to remember

the methodical torturous staircase

We walked down, apart together.

Voices catcalling us

“Whoo Hoo!  It’s lovely down here…Join us.”

They lied and laughed

As we both stumbled and fell

Into our misery, alone together.

leaving us with no way back

to the azure sky and green hills.

Except  to test each our own wings,

And say the magic words,

And learn to fly.
