I Miss Sleeping

3 am

Why did I have to wake up at 3:50 AM today?  Wide awake.  I lay in bed trying to go back to sleep for over an hour, to no avail.  It will be a long day, I fear.

I wonder what it would be like to sleep through the night, unaided by a prescription sleep aid.  I don’t take them often any more, but I do miss the 6 hours of unbroken sleep they gave me.  I generally wake up every couple of hours, and if I’m lucky, I get back to sleep pretty quickly.  If I’m not lucky…well, it’s like this morning.  Lay there, and hope.

I’ve tried melatonin.  I took the smallest dose I could find, and cut it in half.  I sleep, but I also dream so vividly that I awake exhausted.  So, scratch that.  I’ve tried over the counter sleep aids, which work sometimes and sometimes don’t.  What works the best is to play some quiet meditation type music and to read for awhile.  I can usually get to sleep, and often when I wake up, I put the music on again and go back to sleep.  For some reason at 4 AM this morning, I didn’t want to put the music back on.

I guess I’ll use the extra time to set up for my book club meeting tonight.  And make some lists of what I need to pick up today on my lunch hour.

And drink another cup of coffee.  Thank God for coffee.

  1. Sometimes, I wish as well I can sleep for 6 hours straight, but it will never happen.
I suffer from chronic insomnia, and I never took sleeping pills or any medication and I will never do it, it’s too dangerous

    • I’ve never taken anything addictive, but I just can’t function on 2 or 3 hours of sleep so I’ll do what I have to do to get sleep! Last night I got at least 5 hours, albeit broken. So that’s at least a level I can function at. When I’m not working anymore I’ll just let it be. Big hugs to you.

      • Thank you ❤ good to know you're not taking any addictive medication
sometimes i can function well even if I slept for 2-3 hours but sometimes I feel like a zombie

  2. I have always been a night creature.. awake until very late, but it doesn’t work too well with having a job that starts at 8 am.. lol. So yeah… am a bit frustrated sometimes.. I will function if I get to sleep 5 hours, but it is not healthy.. I read somewhere that if you regularly get less than 7 hours of sleep, your body and health will suffer consequences, possibly serious ones, since the cells do not get to repair themselves enough etc. Yikes, I am probably doomed then… lol. I hope you can sleep better in Florida! 😊

  3. I have a saying ‘You can take anything, just don’t take my sleep.’ Those of us that have interrupted sleep know the value of a precious uninterrupted 6 hrs. Now that i’m retired, i can listen to my biological clock which often shuts down around 1-2am and arise whenever i want to which can be as late as 9ish. It’s one of the best perks of slaying my demnos, earning a peaceful mind. God knows when my marriage ended i couldn’t sleep for anything. 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am, 5am, watching it grow daylight outside. I felt terrified i’d be like this permanently. There have been a few times with Doug that he got under my skin so seriously that again sleep was a precious gift, not to be taken for granted. Him and a bad job.
These days i have no man, no job and sleep like a baby.
I know it’s of little comfort however it’s common to suffer from interrupted sleep as we age. I have resorted to sleep music, sounds of waves and gulls, anything that takes my mind away from the incessant chatter of things i’d rather not think about.
Florida sounds like heaven…i can picture you there! Until then…night night, sleep tight and don’t let those bed bugs bite 😉 hugs.
