An Evening with the Opera

Tonight I’m home, and watching TV and on the computer.  Bored with FB, I went on YouTube.  I just perused the home page, and clicked on Luciano Pavarotti.  The first video was Pavarotti singing Nessum Dorma in Central Park.  And I thought….God, to listen to him, imagine in person!, is to be in the presence of true true greatness.

Then something he sang with Celine Dion, I Hate you then I love you, which was nice but not as impressive as Nessum Dorma.  Then singing Miserere with Zucchero.  I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t know who Zucchero was, but I googled him.  So now I know that he is well known in Italy, but is not an opera singer.  I watched Pavarotti sing  Ave Maria with Bono at an anti Iraq war concert in Italy.  That was amazing.

I never liked Opera as a kid.  I have grown to love it as an adult, but still don’t have any of it to listen to.  I think I need to put some on my iPhone though.  It is so beautiful, something you feel, not just hear.  None of it is in English, yet…you can feel the emotion.  It’s enough to make me cry, but because it just delights the senses, with it’s richness, and fullness, and it’s sheer beauty.  It has the ability to transport us to a higher place.

S once told me he would take me to the opera.  One more of those things he said that was just idle talk, never meant to be taken seriously, and had to be let go.  Well…..someone will.  Or I’ll take myself.  That’s for another day.  Right now, I think I’ll go to iTunes and see if I can’t find some Pavarotti to put on my phone, for those days when I am numbed by all the callousness in this world.

I leave you with this.  In the words of David Crosby, “Music Is Love”.

  1. Are you sure WE’RE not connected by the universe or something? So many of your posts stir my blood for some reason. And, Pavoratti! I have him all over my IPOD and also on cds’. Nessum Dorma is one of my favorites. I almost wore out my rewind button, playing this song over and over and over.

    • We are all connected, lol. But really, yes we ARE. Definitely.

I stayed up an extra hour last night, making a new play list for classical music, and have about $10 worth of music on it now! I don’t know why I waited so long to do this. When you are feeling particularly down, I think listening to Nessum Dorma can cure anything! I think Pavarotti reminds us that there is always beauty to be found in the world. And gives us a good dose! I’m glad that the iPhone doesn’t have a rewind button, lol.

      • Did you know that he and Lady Diana were friends? They were having dinner once at the palace and were seated next to each other. Pavarotti saw something interesting on Lady Dianas’ plate so he took a piece with his fork. You know how staid those British royals can be so that was absolutely unheard of….ut Lady Diana found it charming.

  2. I love, love, love this post! I also love opera! Just because of this, I have to send you a link to a beautiful video, perhaps you’ve seen it, but anyways, if you haven’t I guess you would like it. 🙂 (Unfortunately, it can not be watched on “Youtube cel phone app” but only on a normal computer, it seems). Anyway, this is my “go to song” for crying. (Lol). And I love this video, cause, well, cause it has beautiful images… 🙂

    Hugs! 🙂

  3. Why are tenors and bass more venerated? Well, the light banter here suggests that tenors are prima donnas, up in the clouds. Basses are dark souls, happiest down in the dungeon. But your friendly neighborhood baritone?
