How do you wake up in the morning? Are you “up and at ‘em”, ready to get stuff done? Do you wake just long enough to get showered, dressed, etc before leaving for work? Or, conversely do you need to take the time to move into your day?
When I worked, I left for work about 8:15. I was up usually about 5:30. I spent at least an hour, often more, just gliding into my day. Coffee, a small bite to eat, meditation, writing. In the summer I sat outside when I could. I hated having to rush to get ready and out of the house. I needed that hour to myself to clear my head, to remind me that life is not all about getting up, going to work, coming home, eating and going to bed. I needed a life outside of that routine, and I took my time in the morning, at least an hour, and lived.
Now, I’m retired. And that’s how I like to start every day, except I usually get up around 7:30 now. With a bowl of fruit, a cup of coffee, sitting at my computer either writing, or reading my mail, perusing FB, and now I get to do it for as long as I want! Sometimes a couple hours! It’s awesome. Once I’ve had my quiet time, my time to myself, I am ready to get something productive done for the day, though often my productive hours are governed by how well I slept. Lately, I’ve been sleeping well. Saturday was a lay day, and my productivity was limited to going swimming, going out to lunch, watching TV and reading, and spending some time with Dan’s mother. Sunday I actually accomplished some things. Swimming, vacuumed, laundry, baked banana bread, made breakfast for us, and lunch for Dan and his mom, reading, watching a movie, making a nice dinner with my sweetie. It was a good day.
The jury is out on today, but we are heading back to my house, having spent 3 days at Dan’s. I have a feeling it will be productive in the medium range.
So tell me, how do you start your day? Am I alone in needing that hour or two to myself? Let me know, I’m interested to find out.
As always, love and light to all.
It sure is nice to have flexibility. I’m a night owl, so my preferred morning pace is slow. Sometimes I check the weather forecast on my phone from bed, think about what to wear…. Then I get up and take my thyroid medication (on an empty stomach) and if it’s early go back to bed or wander around a bit. Then I get dressed and eat my oatmeal and fruit while looking at the computer or read a daily meditation. If I have to be somewhere early, like volunteering with the first graders or taking the dog to the vet, I only look at my phone because the computer can make me lose track of time.
I agree, the flexibility is wonderful. This is a rare occasion where we are dissimilar, lol. I was asleep, soundly last night at 10. (Although that’s a bit early for even me.) I can see how late you are up, because so often, I check WP when I go to bed, and am always delighted to see comments from you when I wake up! And yes, it’s way to easy to lose track of time on the computer!
My husband is an early bird. He makes breakfast and I let the dog out one more time at night and make sure everything is locked up. It’s good to have people on both ends of the spectrum.
It is! We’re the opposite and the bases get covered! Nice when it works isn’t it?
Yes! Opposites in some ways, but very similar values.
