Dispelling Darkness (A Poem)

I knew you were hurting
Somewhere deep inside
Sins you haven’t forgiven
Or maybe thoughts that you lay aside

I watch as you retreat
To your unadorned safe place
A place I can’t come with you
Where I’m hopeful you’ll find grace

Just then fear tried creeping in on me
But I stopped it at the door
I won’t let it undo me, or us
I’ve walked that path before.

So quietly I wait
For this darkness to dispel
It cannot overcome the light
And the light is where we dwell.

Later you’ll return to me
Knowing I am strong
The darkness tried, but couldn’t win
To each other we belong
